About this site

This website explains how to use over-the-counter medicines (OTC; medicines available at pharmacies or online) in Japan.

For mild conditions such as colds and headaches, OTC medicines can help without visiting to a hospital.

But it is difficult to choose one for non-japanese residents or tourists.

This site gives you an answer.

This site is written with reference to currently available medical literature databases(PubMed, UpToDate, guidelines).

Basically, it is written by one author with consistency, but several colleague doctors check the content.

Because medicine is advancing rapidly, please understand that uncertainties remain in the content even with regular updates.

Therefore, any use of the information on this website is at your own risk. This website accepts no responsibility for the consequences.

Warnings

  • People with a certain medical condition under treatment
  • People who have not had a medical check-up within the past year
  • People who have had advised to visit a hospital, but not have done yet

In addition, some medicines cannot be used if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, have had certain illnesses, etc. Please note that each page may state such precautions.

If you have any other concerns about your condition, you need to consult a healthcare provider or pharmacist.

Questions on this website cannot be answered regarding individual health conditions.

This is because physical conditions are highly individualized, so it is difficult to make a diagnosis based solely on email correspondence. Please understand.

Questions about general things or inquiries about matters I have missed writing are welcomed!
